(Bangkok).- High-level talks continue as Thailand enforces border security and seeks resolution over illegal structures near Trat province.
High-level negotiations are ongoing between Thailand and Cambodia regarding a former casino building in Thmor Da, Cambodia, which encroaches on Thai territory opposite Tha Sen Village in Trat. Thailand has formally demanded the building’s removal, according to Royal Thai Navy Commander-in-Chief Adm Pairote Fuangchan.
“As a principle, whoever built it must dismantle it,” Adm Pairote said. “If they refuse and ask us to remove it ourselves, we will seek reimbursement for the costs.” Negotiations between senior officials of both nations continue while the navy operates strictly within tactical limits to secure the border.
Adm Pairote also addressed another border issue near Nong Ri Village in Chamrak sub-district, where three Cambodian houses had stood over 100 metres inside Thai territory since 1986. All three houses have now been demolished, but Cambodian troops remain in the area, prompting Thailand to lodge a formal protest.
Royal Thai Navy spokesman RAdm Paraj Ratanajaipan confirmed that following the demolitions, additional Cambodian troop deployments and trench digging were observed. To support border management amid challenging terrain and landmines, the navy has constructed a tactical road.
RAdm Paraj stressed that negotiations remain the priority. “Negotiation is not just talking; we escalate measures step by step. Several proposals have been presented to facilitate their withdrawal, and we are prepared to assist if they agree,” he said, highlighting Thailand’s efforts to prevent tensions from escalating into a larger conflict.
