(Las Vegas).- For the first time in more than two months, more than half of the nation’s casinos are open. According to the American Gaming Association, 519 of the Unites States’ 989 commercial and tribal gaming properties have re-opened in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic that has already claimed the lives of 108,000 Americans.

The scene from Las Vegas as casinos reopen

Every gaming jurisdiction has handled the crisis differently. Casinos in Florida re-opened in mid-May to long lines, while the New Jersey governor is hoping to have Atlantic City up and running again by July 4.

On Thursday, the biggest gaming market in the United States re-opened, at least partially. With the state in the second phase of its plan, Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak gave the casinos approval to re-open with several restrictions in place, including a limited amount of seating available at all table games.

Throughout the city, there were 49 casinos that were back in business, including 15 properties on the Strip. Many of the bigger gaming operators have opted to open only some of their casinos while they gauge public interest. While some casinos opened to lines, others reported very few patrons.

Although gamblers are not required to wear masks, many have chosen to do so along with casino staff. Some casinos are checking temperatures at the door, while others have put up glass partitions and increased the number of hand sanitizing stations on the gambling floor.
