(Macau).- Gross gaming revenue rose to 22.6 billion patacas year-on-year, driven by continued recovery in Macau’s consolidated casino sector, according to official data.
Macau’s casinos generated gross gaming revenue (GGR) of 22.633 billion patacas (US$2.79 billion) in January, representing a 24.0 percent increase compared with the same month last year, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) said on Thursday. On a month-on-month basis, GGR increased by 8.35 percent.
The city’s concessioned gaming industry is operated by six integrated resort (IR) groups—Sands, Galaxy, SJM, Melco, Wynn and MGM—which together run 20 casinos as of the end of 2025, down from a peak of 42 venues in 2021. The reduction follows a government-mandated consolidation that included the elimination of satellite casinos operated by third parties.
Under their concession agreements, operators are required to diversify into non-gaming attractions and contribute to cultural heritage promotion and urban renewal. They pay a 35 percent direct gaming tax on GGR, plus an additional 5 percent in levies for public and social funds.
During the three-year consolidation process, which concluded on December 31, 2025, gaming tables, slot machines and local employees from closed satellite casinos were transferred to casinos directly operated by the concessionaires. Currently, SJM and Sands operate five casinos each, Galaxy and Melco three apiece, while Wynn and MGM run two each.
DICJ data show that baccarat continued to dominate the market last year, accounting for 85.1 percent of total GGR across Macau’s 16 authorized games of chance. Roulette, by contrast, contributed just 0.49 percent.
By the end of last year, Macau’s casinos operated around 6,000 gaming tables and 12,000 slot machines. The gaming sector employed 52,898 full-time workers as of the second quarter of last year, representing nearly 11 percent of the city’s total workforce.
