Allwyn Conference Highlights: Participant Protection in Gambling

Acting Chief Executive Sarah Gardner highlighted the critical role of player safeguarding during her keynote address at the Allwyn Participant Protection Conference.

Turning Commitments into Reality

The conference served as a platform to review the milestones achieved over the past year regarding The National Lottery's stewardship. Among the major advancements was the implementation of the largest technological upgrade in the lottery's history earlier this year, known as the "Digital Cutover." According to Gardner, this upgrade was not merely technical, but rather "the key gateway to the innovation of products that Allwyn wanted to begin." This modernization has already paved the way for new offerings, such as the introduction of Powerball, aimed at boosting returns for community initiatives.

Funding Good Causes and Maintaining Public Trust

The financial impact of these operations remains substantial. Over the past twelve months, The National Lottery has raised £1.7 billion for good causes across the United Kingdom, supporting sports clubs, museums, and historic sites. However, Gardner stressed that maintaining this level of public funding requires absolute public trust, noting that the lottery operates under intense public scrutiny: "In essence it’s a high wire act where one wrong step can cause big problems."

Data from the Gambling Survey for Great Britain (GSGB) indicates that 31 percent of participants played The National Lottery in a recent four-week window, making it the most common gambling activity in the country. While statistics show it remains one of the lowest-risk products available, the regulator maintains that proactive safeguards are non-negotiable.

Strengthening Online and Retail Protections

To address potential risks, Allwyn has successfully integrated new online and app-based player protections while working alongside physical retailers nationwide to support vulnerable players. Gardner concluded by emphasizing that safeguarding participants must remain central to the institution's future success, stating that "trust forfeited is never easy to win back."
