(Colombia).- New technologies have brought about the rejuvenation of some traditional activities that have remained focused on a very specific audience. A clear example is in the gaming sector, which with its leap to the online business model has emerged as a source of wealth and employment in difficult economic times.
There are countries that promote gambling activities with their decisions towards gambling legislation. A great example in this regard is Colombia, which has prevailed in this type of leisure, so that it acquires a greater role in its Gross Domestic Product. Products such as online slots have been a huge revolution in Colombian entertainment.
During the last six months, the industry has had total sales of around us$ 1390 million, which represent a 54% growth in interannual rate. This important boost comes together with a Digital Revolution which has contributed to this huge impact, in which online slots dominate the digital sector in the country.
This information offers a good opportunity to all Colombian leaders to create jobs and wealth in many areas of the country. In this sense, the reactions have not been long in coming. The Minister of Finance and Public Credit, José Manuel Restrepo Abondano affirmed: “We have the challenge of implementing a triad that consists, first of all, of support for SMEs, young people and women so affected by unemployment and the informal ones; secondly, to promote economic growth in which the gambling industry will make a very important contribution and, thirdly, to achieve fiscal stability through a social investment project that contributes to the generation of jobs and the reduction of poverty ”, adds the head of the Colombian Treasury.
Given such growth, the country's Administration should not lower its guard when it comes to increasing the security of the activity and putting aside bad practices. In this sense, Abondano points out that "the sector has positioned itself as an industry example of transparency, as has been expressed by the Financial Superintendence and the UIAF, as a consequence of their preventive actions in matters of money laundering and terrorist financing, but also because of its strategy to fight against illegality, articulated with territorial entities and authorities, which makes it more competitive ”, he points out.
