(Brasília).- President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva once again criticized betting and warned Brazilians about the risks of taking on gambling-related debt during an event at the Ministry of Labor to present data on formal job creation in the country.

Lula Criticizes Bets and Warns Brazilians About Gambling-Related Debt

Lula Distinguishes Credit from Gambling-Related Debt

During the presentation of data from the Annual Social Information Report (RAIS), Lula said that indebtedness should not necessarily be considered negative when it is related to the acquisition of goods, increased assets, or improvements in families’ quality of life.

The president, however, made a distinction regarding debts incurred through gambling and betting.

“I am not against people being in debt. I am against people being in debt because of a debt that has no objective of growth, improving their quality of life, or increasing their assets,” Lula said.

According to Lula, credit can be considered “good and necessary” when it is used to purchase products or services that contribute to family well-being.

Among the examples cited by the president were televisions, clothing, school supplies, computers, and telephones. For Lula, the government should encourage consumption as long as it remains within families’ ability to repay their debts.

Betting Emerges as an Exception in Lula’s Remarks

When addressing spending on gambling, the president adopted a more critical stance and recommended that people avoid using financial resources to place bets.

“Do not spend on gambling, because the misfortune of gambling is the misfortune of lies,” Lula said.

The president then associated betting behavior with attempts to recover previous losses.

“The misfortune of gambling is that you spend your whole life gambling to pay for the loss from the first bet you made,” he added.

The statements once again put bets and problem gambling at the center of Brazil’s public debate, at a time when the country is moving forward with the implementation of its regulated fixed-odds betting market.

Responsible Gambling Debate Gains Ground

Lula’s remarks come amid the consolidation of Brazil’s sports betting regulatory framework and ongoing discussions about measures to protect bettors.

The growth of the regulated market has also increased attention to issues such as advertising, addiction prevention, spending limits, and responsible gambling mechanisms.

In this context, the president’s warning about using credit to place bets reinforces one of the key concerns of consumer protection policies: preventing betting from being used as an alternative source of income or as a way to recover financial losses.

The relationship between betting and indebtedness is also gaining prominence in discussions about operator responsibility and the need for mechanisms capable of identifying risky behavior.

Lula Takes Part in Formal Employment Data Presentation

The statement about betting was made during the presentation of the latest Annual Social Information Report (RAIS) data at the Ministry of Labor.

It was the first time Lula had participated in the presentation of formal employment figures during his current term in office.

The event presented an overview of the period beginning in January 2023, when the current presidential term started, through June 2026, covering jobs governed by the Consolidation of Labor Laws (CLT) and public-sector employment relationships.

Although the meeting focused on the labor market, the president’s comments on betting attracted attention because they came at a time of intense debate over the social impacts of the growth of bets in Brazil.

Betting Should Not Be Seen as a Source of Income

By distinguishing between debt related to consumption and debt associated with gambling, Lula reinforced the idea that betting should not be treated as a financial strategy.

The statement also aligns with Brazil’s betting advertising rules, which seek to prevent bets from being presented as an investment, source of income, or solution to economic difficulties.

For the regulated market, the position highlights the growing importance of responsible gambling policies and communication about the risks associated with betting.

The debate is expected to continue as Brazil consolidates its regulatory framework for bets and expands discussions around the prevention of problem gambling, bettor protection, and industry responsibility.
