Macau: May gaming revenues to see 2 to 4 pct y-on-y jump

(Macau).- Analysts from Sanford C. Bernstein estimate that gross gaming revenues will increase between 2 and 4 per cent year-on-year in May.

Macau: May gaming revenues to see 2 to 4 pct y-on-y jump

In May, 2018 gross gaming revenue in Macau amounted to MOP25.48 billion (US$3.15 billion) in May 2018, up 12.1 per cent year-on-year.

“Heading into late May and June, we expect y/y comparison to begin easing. Recall GGR was quite robust in early 2018, until US-China trade tensions heightened beginning last summer,” a note from the brokerage stated.

Bernstein considered however that there could be surprise rebound in VIP results in the second half of the year, caused by a recovering credit cycle in China, while warning of possible trade war impact.

‘The recent heightened tension in U.S.-China trade relations however, casts uncertainty over the GGR recovery. If a trade war sustains over an extended period, it will likely pose as headwind to China’s economy and gaming spend from China’s high net worth individuals in Macau.”
