(Thailand).- Melco Resorts & Entertainment has opened an office in Bangkok and is starting to build a team in Thailand’s capital, said the gaming and integrated resorts operator’s CEO, Lawrence Ho.
His remarks were made on Wednesday in Bangkok at an event announcing a partnership between Melco and the National Soft Power Strategy Committee (THACCA), a body established by Thailand’s prime minister.
The Bangkok Post reported that Melco is interested in investing in hotels and integrated resorts in the country. The Thai English-language newspaper quoted Lawrence Ho as saying that Melco is awaiting clarity on investment regulations from the government regarding entertainment complexes with casinos to better determine the size and budget for any projects.
Thai legal gambling
Thailand is in the process of approving legalised gambling focusing on integrated resorts, with a bill expected to be passed this year. Major players, including some of Macau’s ‘Big Six’ gaming concessionaires, are reportedly eyeing potential investments in the ‘Land of Smiles’.
Melco operates casinos and integrated resorts in Macau, Philippines, Cyprus and has recently launched a project in Sri Lanka.
In an exclusive interview with Macau Business in October, Lawrence Ho said the company’s “goal has always been to look at the world and identify which jurisdictions offer growth opportunities.”
Elevating Thailand’s ‘soft power’
Melco’s partnership with THACCA “aims to elevate Thailand’s identity through cultural, creative, and innovative contributions across entertainment, design, architecture, and beyond,” according to a joint press release. The first major project is the Global Soft Power Talks, “an event series designed to inspire innovation and shape Thailand’s cultural strategy.”
The first instalment of this series will be held on 24 February in Bangkok, bringing together “thought leaders, global experts, and Thai visionaries to explore how Thailand can leverage its unique strengths to thrive in the global arena.”
Lawrence Ho stressed Melco’s “commitment to elevating Thailand’s global prominence.” The Melco chairman and CEO noted that “Thailand’s rich cultural heritage and creative potential make it a natural leader in soft power.” He added that the company’s “role is to bring global expertise, foster knowledge exchange, and empower Thai talent to achieve their full potential on the international stage.”
The chairperson of the National Soft Power Development Committee, Surapong Suebwonglee, said the partnership paves the way to “amplify Thailand’s identity and cultural assets,” ensuring that the country’s creative industries “are recognised and celebrated worldwide.”
