(Brasilia).- Banned from the government of Eurico Gaspar Dutra, in 1946, casinos can return to Brazilian cities shortly. Along with them there is also the possibility of the return of the bingos. At least that is what a survey conducted by the Institute Paraná surveys with deputies, in which 52,1% was favorable to the legalization of all games of chance.
For 40,8% of congressmen who were against the measure, the main concerns are a possible facilitation to money laundering and the increase of pathological vice.
Already in the portion favorable to return, the location is the greatest divisor. While 40,1% believe that casinos should be installed in tourist cities, 21,6% believe that the most appropriate place are cities with low HDI (Human Development Index), and another 8,4% see the proposal with good eyes regardless of the location. 16,2% are indifferent to the choice of place.
A bill on the matter has been pending in the Federal Senate since 2014 and, currently, awaits deliberation in plenary to move forward. According to the PL website, 80.6% of Internet users who voted on the project are favorable to the return of the game of chance.
In one of his last steps as President of the Republic, Michel Temer legalized the sports bet in December 2018. The measure was an important first step for the legalized return of games of chance and betting.
The investigation with the congressmen was carried out by the Paraná Institute with 238 federal deputies from all regions and Brazilian states, through personal or telephone interviews between May 27 and 31, 2019.
