Senators Push Ban on Gambling Ads Targeting Minors
Two senators working to protect children online are introducing bipartisan legislation that would ban digital gambling advertisements targeting people under the age of 18, hoping to address fears that minors are getting hooked on betting through ads on social media.
The details
Sens. Katie Britt (R., Ala.) and Richard Blumenthal (D., Conn.) are introducing legislation called the Gaming Advertisement to Minors Enforcement (GAME) Act to create a federal prohibition on ads on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram that promote sports betting to minors. They said the bill hopes to combat the “rapid and concerning rise in youth gambling.”
Under the bill, the Federal Trade Commission would be responsible for enforcement, which would include financial penalties. Repeat offenders would be referred to the Department of Justice, which could impose up to $100,000 in financial penalties.
