BOS Supports Proposal to Criminalize Unlicensed Gambling Targeting Swedish Players

(Stockholm).- The Swedish Trade Association for Online Gambling welcomes new legislative recommendations that would make it illegal for unlicensed gambling operators to passively accept Swedish players.

BOS Supports Proposal to Criminalize Unlicensed Gambling Targeting Swedish Players

BOS, the Swedish Trade Association for Online Gambling, has voiced strong support for the proposal submitted today to the Ministry of Finance regarding the Gambling Act’s scope of application. The inquiry recommends that gambling companies without a Swedish gambling license should be prohibited from passively accepting Swedish consumers. In other words, unlicensed operators must actively block Swedish players from accessing their services.

BOS has long advocated for such a legislative change—one that strengthens the integrity of the licensed gambling market in Sweden. The association has worked toward this goal since the reregulation of Sweden’s gambling market in 2019.

“This is an important contribution to strengthening the Swedish license system,” said Gustaf Hoffstedt, Secretary General of BOS.The proposal aims to criminalize nearly all forms of unlicensed gambling in Sweden. I expect the government will soon submit a bill to the Riksdag based on these recommendations. Well done to the investigator, and I hope for an equally strong response from both the government and Parliament. Unlicensed gambling in Sweden must be rooted out.”

If enacted, this legislative proposal would mark a major step forward in protecting Swedish consumers and ensuring a safer, more regulated iGaming environment.
