(Brasilia).- Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO), chairman of the CPI on Manipulation of Games and Sports Betting, claimed that Finance Minister Fernando Haddad is against betting on factors outside the outcome of the football match, such as yellow cards. Last month, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also defended such a ban.
At an ICC meeting this week, Kajuru said he heard Haddad's position during a meeting with the minister. Addressing to Sentor Romátio (PL-RJ), Kajuru said:
“Haddad congratulated us on the position we both have on the issue of sports betting, where betting on a yellow card, a red card, a handball, a corner kick, a penalty kick would be prohibited..... In short, you could only bet on the result of the match. Minister Haddad asked me to let you know that he totally agrees with you and me, President Lula already does, so let's wait for the decree law”. When contacted, Haddad did not respond.
Sports betting on yellow and red cards was criticised by Lula last month after Flamengo player Bruno Henrique was the subject of a Federal Police operation for allegedly manipulating bets. In 2023, Bruno Henrique caused a yellow card to improperly benefit from betting, according to investigations.
