Credit card gambling ban passes lower house

Credit cards had previously been banned for betting purposes at physical gambling locations such as casinos.

The new laws were passed by the lower house of federal parliament on Tuesday with the support of both major parties.

Attempts to amend the gambling changes by the opposition and crossbenchers were unsuccessful.

The credit card ban was a recommendation of a joint inquiry into gambling reform, which was set up under the previous Morrison government.

Companies that don't enforce the ban on credit cards would be slapped with a fine of more than $234,000 under the changes.

The media watchdog would have the power under the new laws to enforce the ban.

Credit payments using digital currency such as cryptocurrency would also be included.

Banks and betting companies will be given a six-month transitional period to implement the changes

Legislation will now move to the Senate for debate.
