The Netherlands Gambling Authority (Ksa) notes that the ban on sports sponsorship came into effect on July 1st without any problems. In the lead-up to the ban, the regulator announced it would pay extra attention to gambling in sports and intensify its oversight. After the ban came into effect on July 1st, virtually all public displays disappeared.
The ban on non-targeted advertising for online gambling came into effect on July 1st, 2023. This put an end to advertising in public places and buildings accessible to the public. Because long-term contracts are often concluded for sports sponsorship, a transitional arrangement was in place for this form of advertising until July 1, 2025. Sponsorship of athletes, teams of athletes, but also of clubs, competitions, shirts, and other (promotional) materials is no longer permitted.
In the first week after the ban took effect, the Ksa encountered several minor violations, such as the sale of merchandise bearing the gambling provider's logo in sports club webshops. The providers in question received a warning letter requesting them to cease the violation that same week. If they fail to comply, the Ksa can still take enforcement action, for example, with a fine.
The Ksa reiterates that gambling providers are responsible for complying with the ban, even if they collaborate with external parties.
