(New Delhi).- A legal filing reveals that Indian gaming firm A23 has formally contested the government's prohibition on online real-money games—marking the first legal action against a regulation that abruptly halted popular competitions and cast uncertainty over the future of the gaming industry.

Gaming Firm Files First Lawsuit Against India’s Online Money Games Ban

Indian gaming company A23 has challenged the government's ban on online money-based games, a legal filing shows, in the first case against a law that led to the sudden shutdown of popular contests and has thrown the industry's future into doubt.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government issued a law last week to ban such games, which the industry says rely on skill and are therefore not gambling. Gambling was already highly restricted in India.

India faces first legal challenge against online money games ban

Last Thursday, India's parliament passed a bill to ban online games played with money in a move that threatens the survival of the popular fantasy gaming sector, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government flagged the high risk of financial harm.

The sudden ban has shocked an industry backed by venture capital firms like Tiger Global and Peak XV Partners and which was set to be worth $3.6 billion in India by 2029.
