(Kansas City).- Kansas lawmakers may soon snuff out smoking on casino floors, with a bill under consideration that would ban cigarettes in gaming areas and broaden the state’s definition of regulated spaces.
Kansas lawmakers may soon call time on lighting up, with a bill that would put out smoking on casino floors. Lawmakers are considering a bill that would ban smoking on casino gaming floors and expand the state's definition of smoking to include electronic cigarettes and marijuana.
House Bill 2252 would amend the Kansas Indoor Clean Air Act to prohibit smoking in areas currently exempted, including lottery gaming facilities and racetracks.
The proposal would also broaden the legal definition of smoking to include the use of electronic cigarettes and the burning of marijuana, placing those activities under the same restrictions as traditional tobacco products.
In Kansas, smoking is generally prohibited in enclosed public places and workplaces, but exceptions allow it in certain locations, including casino gambling floors.
The bill was requested by lawmakers on behalf of a group advocating for casino workers’ health, citing concerns about exposure to secondhand smoke.
There are 10 casinos in the state, including for state-owned casinos.
