Sri Lanka Updates Betting Taxes and Casino Admission Charges for Locals

Introduction to the New Betting and Casino Fee Changes

The Sri Lankan government has introduced a new proposal as part of its 2025 budget that will affect the gambling sector. This includes increasing the betting levy and raising the fees that locals must pay to access casino floors.

Details of the Increased Gambling Levy

The current betting levy rate, set at 15%, is proposed to rise by 3%, bringing the total to 18%. This adjustment aims to generate additional revenue from gambling activities within the country.

Higher Casino Entry Fees for Local Residents

Alongside the levy increase, the government plans to double the entry fee for locals wanting to visit casino floors, increasing the charge from $50 to $100. These changes will come into effect following a review of the Betting Gaming Levy Act, which is presently underway and focused specifically on these amendments.

Government Approval and Legislative Process

Nalinda Jayatissa, Cabinet Spokesman, noted that the Attorney General has already given clearance for the draft bill. The Cabinet has approved publishing the draft bill in the government gazette, after which it will be sent to the Parliament for final approval.

Regulation and Tax Collection

The Gambling Regulatory Authority is responsible for overseeing the industry. This body ensures that gambling operators comply with relevant laws and manages the collection of applicable taxes.
