(Thailand).- A new law is on course to be introduced within the next year, paving the way for potential casino projects to open by 2029
Thailand is in the way of legalizing casinos in its current legislative session, aiming to boost its tourism-dependent economy. This marks an unprecedented step for the country, a top tourist destination in Southeast Asia.
An initial feasibility study has already been approved by the Thai House of Representatives in late March, according to the Bagkok Post:. “The study has since been forwarded to the country’s cabinet for further evaluation”.
While gambling in general is widely considered illegal on Thai soil itself, underground poker cash games are rumored to have been running for a long time. Many Thai poker pros have been traveling the global circuit for many years, some of whom rose to prominence through the Triton Poker high-stakes tournaments.
Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin confirmed the ongoing process through his official account on X, formerly Twitter, on March 29, stating that it was “an important step in solving the gambling problem,” and that it was “adhering to the principals of reality” to bring “the gray economy to be regulated and collect taxes correctly.”
“In the past, we have wasted enough time and opportunities. The government will reclaim lost time and turn it into an economic opportunity for the country and fellow citizens,” the statement read.
