(Richmond).- The push to bring a casino to Fairfax County advanced this week as the Virginia House of Delegates approved legislation already passed by the Senate in February. With both chambers backing different versions, the bill now heads to conference, where lawmakers must reconcile the measures before it can move forward.
The Virginia House of Delegates voted to approve the casino bill, which is now in conference. The Senate bill passed in February. Both chambers must now agree on a version of the bill, since they both voted on different versions, before it can advance.
The bill calls for a casino to be built anywhere in Fairfax County, provided it is part of a mixed-use entertainment development.
Supporters say the county is desperate for the revenue a casino could generate, as well as jobs.
Sen. Scott Surovell (D-Fairfax County) revived legislation this year.
"Fairfax County has the highest real estate tax rate of any jurisdiction in the state except for Falls Church," Surovell told WUSA9 in January. "This would allow the county to diversify its revenue sources and relieve some of that pressure."
Opponents say the majority of Fairfax County residents don’t want the increased traffic and the potential for deleterious aspects of gambling, such as addiction.
The No Fairfax Casino Coalition says the costs far outweigh the benefits and argue that only developers and casino operators will benefit.
