(Washington).- Proposed legislation could expand mobile betting options for tribal casinos and allow wagering on in-state college teams, signaling a potential shift in one of the most tightly regulated sports betting markets in the U.S.

Washington Lawmakers Weigh Easing Tribal Sports Betting Restrictions

Washington state legislators have begun discussions on a proposal that could loosen some of the strict limitations governing sports betting at tribal casinos, marking a potential shift in one of the most restrictive legal sports betting markets in the United States.

During a hearing held on Friday, lawmakers examined legislation that would expand online sportsbook options for tribal operators and revise current prohibitions on wagering involving in-state college sports. Under the proposal, bets on Washington-based college teams would be permitted, while individual player proposition bets on college athletes from in-state teams would remain prohibited.

The bill would also allow tribes to accept mobile sports bets from any licensed sportsbook operating in Washington, rather than limiting partnerships to a single provider, as is currently the case. Supporters argue that the changes could modernize the market while maintaining safeguards around college athletics.

Friday’s session marked the first public discussion of the proposed legislation. No vote was taken, and lawmakers did not set a timeline for further consideration or legislative action.
