(Madison).- Governor Tony Evers signs Assembly Bill 601, allowing online sports betting tied to Tribal lands, while emphasizing fairness among tribes and responsible regulation.
Wisconsin has officially legalized online sports betting after Governor Tony Evers signed Assembly Bill 601 into law, marking a significant shift in the state’s gaming landscape.
Under the new legislation, online sports wagers will be permitted only if processed through servers located on Tribal lands, reinforcing the central role of Wisconsin’s federally recognized tribes in the state’s betting framework. While the law paves the way for expansion, implementation will take time, as agreements between the state and individual tribes still need to be negotiated—a process expected to last several months.
Evers framed the bill as an initial step rather than a final solution, stressing the importance of equitable outcomes for all 11 tribes. He warned against any model that could deepen existing disparities, making clear that fairness will be a key condition moving forward.
The measure received bipartisan backing as well as strong support from Tribal Nations, which had urged the governor to approve the legislation. Proponents argue the bill introduces essential safeguards and regulatory oversight, while also creating new revenue streams that can benefit Tribal communities through education, employment, and development initiatives.
However, critics remain concerned about the potential rise in gambling-related harm. The Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling estimates that between 300,000 and 350,000 residents in the state currently face gambling-related issues, highlighting the need for responsible gaming measures as the market expands.
Notably, major sportsbook operators such as DraftKings and FanDuel opposed the bill during the legislative process.
Despite differing viewpoints, the law represents a pivotal development in Wisconsin’s approach to online betting, balancing economic opportunity with regulatory caution and tribal sovereignty.
