(Lagos).- The Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA), in partnership with the African iGaming Alliance, has launched a public awareness initiative in Nigeria to promote responsible gambling and strengthen the #PlaySafe agenda during Safer Gambling Week.
Industry stakeholders gather in Lagos
The initiative was presented during a press briefing held at the LSLGA headquarters in Lagos and hosted by the authority’s Chief Executive Officer, Bashir Are. The event brought together representatives from the gaming industry, responsible-gambling organizations, healthcare institutions and the media.
Among the participants were Olabimpe Akingba, representing the African iGaming Alliance and serving as Responsible Gaming Director at betPawa; Fisayo Oke, CEO of Gamble Alert; Kayode Lawal, CEO of SAFEPLAY Technologies; and Gift Tuadibofa, Executive Secretary of the Association of Nigerian Bookmakers.
The meeting also included representatives from Bet9ja and BetWinner, as well as Dr. Abiola Salawu of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Yaba.
Taking responsible gambling messages beyond the industry
Through the initiative, Lagos has joined the continent-wide #PlaySafe campaign, supporting efforts to bring responsible-gambling messages directly to the public.
As part of the outreach, the campaign will use physical locations and transportation systems across Lagos State to increase public awareness. The approach aims to take responsible-gambling communication beyond online gaming platforms and industry channels, reaching residents in their everyday environments.
Gambling should remain entertainment
The stakeholders emphasized a central principle of the campaign: gambling should always be approached in a safe and controlled manner.
The initiative highlights that gambling should be viewed strictly as entertainment and not as a source of income or a way to address financial difficulties. The message is intended to encourage players to maintain control over their gambling activities and make responsible choices.
The Lagos initiative forms part of broader efforts across Africa to strengthen responsible-gambling awareness and promote safer participation in the gaming sector.
