(Germany).- Björn Bünermann, head of financial accounting at adp Gauselmann GmbH, has achieved what seems almost impossible for most: The 40-year-old ran 100 miles (161 kilometers) on the Berlin Wall Race. After 28 hours and 19 minutes without a minute of sleep, Björn Bünermann has reached his destination.
Paul Gauselmann, CEO of the Gauselmann Group, was also impressed by the extraordinary performance and had already promised his financial support in advance. Because Bünermann also wanted to use the run to collect money for the people affected by the flood disaster. For every kilometer run, company founder Paul Gauselmann has now paid ten euros, which will benefit the flood victims affected in the Gauselmann Group as part of an internal donation campaign."Covering such a distance without sleeping is an incredible effort of will, which I was of course happy to support," emphasizes Paul Gauselmann.
A total of 382 participants from over 30 nations started together with Björn Bünermann in Berlin to complete the 161 kilometers around western Berlin. Even a few days later, the Kirchlengerner is just happy that he has crossed the finish line. "If I do that to myself, I really wanted to reach my goal, and I made it," explains the 40-year-old. Not only a top condition, but also the willingness to explore your own limits were necessary in order to master the 161 kilometers. "Borders are there to be overcome and walls to be torn down," says Björn Bünermann, describing the attitude with which he started. With breaks, he ran a good 28 hours straight - without a single minute of sleep. The actual running time was almost 24 hours and took the athlete past the Reichstag, Checkpoint Charly, the television tower and the East Side Gallery. 108 runners did not reach the finish.
It was particularly hard to find out that I had lost four kilometers from the finish due to a lack of concentration and therefore had to cover an additional 1.5 kilometers. “That hurt and was really heavy in the head. I had focused on the 161 kilometers and in the end it was 163 kilometers. ”In addition to this detour, Bünermann had to overcome other obstacles. While the temperatures were over 30 degrees during the day, it was only 15 degrees at night. After about 60 kilometers, he was also plagued by blisters on his feet. The coin-sized wounds ached with every step. “But that's why I didn't want to give up,” emphasizes the extreme athlete. Even leg cramps and back pain couldn't stop him from continuing. But then Bünermann only walked the last 40 kilometers. At 10.At 7 p.m. he reached the finish exhausted but very happy.
And what was the first thing he did? “I brushed my teeth,” he says with a laugh. “Even before I took off my shoes.” Björn Bünermann drank eleven liters of Coke during the entire run in order to replenish the energy storage system quickly. Various sweets and fruit were added during the 163 kilometers, as well as a cup of pasta, peanuts, rice pudding or the power bars that were brought along. He made up for his sleep after the run.
Because of the blisters he has contracted, sport is currently not an issue for Björn Bünermann. Still, putting his feet up for a long time is not his thing. He would like to start the next run in just one and a half weeks.
