(Macau).- The city’s gaming sector kicks off the year with revenue that has exceeded some analysts’ expectations.

Macao’s gaming industry generated 19.3 billion patacas (US$2.37 billion) in its first monthly tally of gross gaming revenue (GGR) in 2024, a sum that has surpassed market expectations.
This latest figure from the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (also known by its Portuguese initials DICJ) represents a 4.3 percent rise compared to the previous month, which saw a GGR of 18.567 billion patacas (US$2.30 billion).
It also marks a year-on-year change of 67% in comparison to January 2023, which saw a GGR of 11.58 billion patacas (US$1.43 billion).
In 2024, the territory’s full-year GGR is anticipated to grow by over 20 percent year-on-year, according to estimates by Deutsche Bank Securities and Morgan Stanley, who put the figure at 221 billion patacas (US$27.37 billion), a 20.6 percent increase, and 234 billion patacas (US$28.98 billion), a 28 percent increase, respectively.
The government, however, has a more moderate prediction of 216 billion patacas (US$26.75 billion) (an 18 percent increase).
In 2023, the SAR generated an annual GGR of 181.1 billion patacas (US$22.43 billion), which was considerably greater than the government’s forecast of 130 billion patacas (US$16.10 billion), but concurred with the expectations of analysts.
