(Macau).- Macau’s gaming industry is showing signs of a slowdown as China tightens controls on capital flows, offshore wealth and cross-border investments, raising concerns about the outlook for casino revenues and profit margins.

Macau Casino Profits Face New Pressure

Revenue Growth Comes to a Halt

Macau’s casino sector recorded revenue declines in both June and July, bringing an end to 16 consecutive months of growth and raising concerns among investors and industry analysts about a broader slowdown.

The downturn comes as Beijing intensifies its crackdown on capital leaving mainland China. Measures reportedly include greater taxation of offshore trusts, tighter controls on cross-border brokerages and restrictions on outbound investments, including those involving Hong Kong and Macau.

These policies could make it more difficult for wealthy Chinese players to move money into Macau and spend it at the territory’s casinos.

High-Rollers Under Pressure

China’s economic and financial environment is also weighing on casino demand. The MSCI China Index has fallen by around 7% in 2026, while weaker capital markets have reduced the wealth effect among some high-net-worth consumers.

Morningstar analyst Jennifer Song said the June and July results were worse than expected, increasing concerns over whether casino operators can maintain margins as revenues weaken and operating costs rise.

Macau’s post-pandemic recovery was initially driven largely by mass-market players rather than the high rollers traditionally associated with the territory. However, the broader slowdown in China’s economy could now affect these consumers as well, as disposable income and confidence come under pressure.

The territory’s six casino operators recorded significant increases in revenue and profits last year, supported in part by gains in equity markets. That trend has now weakened, with VIP and premium-player activity falling by double digits in June and July.

Profit Margins Expected to Tighten

Analysts expect pressure on casino profitability to continue in the coming months. Operators have increased promotional activity, including complimentary hotel stays and other incentives aimed at attracting visitors and maintaining gaming volumes.

According to Bloomberg estimates, gaming revenue could decline by 3% during the remainder of 2026, while combined second-quarter profit forecasts point to a 7% drop.

Natixis Senior Economist Gary Ng attributed the pressure to the absence of a strong wealth effect and cautious consumer sentiment in mainland China. He also warned that recent regulatory changes affecting taxes and cross-border capital flows could place additional pressure on Macau’s gaming sector.

Macau Faces Pressure to Diversify

The latest challenges come as Beijing continues to push Macau to reduce its dependence on casinos. President Xi Jinping has repeatedly called for greater economic diversification as the territory marks more than two decades under Chinese rule.

Macau’s gaming industry had largely recovered from the pandemic, while its poker scene also showed signs of revival in 2024. However, the cancellation of a planned World Poker Tour event highlighted some of the difficulties still facing the broader casino and gaming ecosystem.
