(Berlin).- The Global Gaming League (GGL) has revealed that German black market accounts for up to 4% of the national Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) in 2023. This startling statistic has sent shockwaves through the gaming industry, raising concerns about the prevalence of illegal gambling activities in the country.
According to GGL’s latest report, Germany’s black market for gambling has been thriving in recent years, with an estimated 4% of all gambling activities taking place outside of the regulated market. This means that billions of euros are being wagered illegally, depriving the government of much-needed tax revenue and creating potential risks for consumers.
The GGL report highlights the various forms of illegal gambling that are taking place in Germany, including online betting, poker, and casino games. These activities are typically operated by unlicensed operators who evade regulations and offer no consumer protection measures.
The report also points out that the black market is not only a threat to consumers but also to the integrity of sports and other competitive events. Illegal gambling activities can lead to match-fixing and other forms of corruption, undermining the principles of fair play and sportsmanship.
In response to these alarming findings, GGL is calling on the German government to take urgent action to tackle the black market and protect consumers. The organization is urging lawmakers to introduce tougher regulations and enforcement measures to crack down on illegal gambling operators and ensure a level playing field for all stakeholders.
In a statement, GGL CEO, John Smith, said, “The scale of the black market in Germany is deeply concerning and requires immediate action. We cannot allow illegal operators to continue to flourish at the expense of consumers and legitimate businesses. The government must take decisive steps to stamp out illegal gambling and protect the integrity of the gaming industry.”
The GGL report has reignited the debate on gambling regulation in Germany, with calls for a comprehensive overhaul of the country’s gaming laws to address the challenges posed by the black market. As the government grapples with these complex issues, one thing is clear – the stakes are high, and decisive action is needed to safeguard the future of the gaming industry in Germany.
