(Macau).- Local authorities indicated Monday that an increase in the number of flights and connecting flights available to people in the city needing to reach European countries and the United States is expected from the end of August.
In a pandemic update press conference today, Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) Public Relations Director, Lau Fong Chi, stated local travel agencies have been in discussions with airlines for an increase in the number of available flights to Europe and the United States via Taipei or Seoul at the end of August or early September.
As reported previously by Macau News Agency (MNA), currently Taiwan and South Korea are the only viable options for local passengers needing to travel outside of Asia, due to pandemic related restrictions in other destinations with flight connections available.
Concerning which airlines would increase their flights, Ms. Lau only mentioned EVA Air – which operates flights from Macau to Taipei – with Air Macau the only airline operating flights from Macau to Seoul.
The main reason for this increase in available flights would be to assist local students enrolled in higher education institutions abroad to reach the countries where they have planned to study in the next academic year.
According to information provided to MNA by the Macau International Airport operating company, there were seven airlines operating 15 destinations in July, with the current list of available destinations not suffering many changes in August.
In July the following airline routes were available:
Mainland China: Xiamen, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanning and Beijing operated by Air Macau.
Taiwan: Taipei, Kaohsiung operated by Air Macau, EVA Air and Starlux
Southeast Asia: Tokyo & Osaka operated by Air Macau, Krong Preah Sihanouk operated by Cambodia Airways and Lanmei Airlines, Hanoi operated by Air Macau, Phnom Penh operated by Cambodia Angkor Air, Bangkok operated by Air Macau, Seoul-Incheon operated by Air Macau., Manila operated by Philippine Airlines.
