Macau: Visitor numbers went up 10.1% in 2019 to more than 39.4 M

(Macau).- The number of total visitor arrivals increased 10.1 per cent year-on-year in 2019 to more than 39.4 million, preliminary data revealed today by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) showed.

Of this total, over 27 million visitors came from Mainland Chinas, up by 10.5 per cent, with 45 per cent of these visitors coming from Guangdong Province. Visitor arrivals from Hong Kong also rose by 16.2 per cent to 7.3 million while visitor arrivals from Taiwan remained almost unchanged at over 1 million.

However, the number of international visitor arrivals dropped by 2.8 per cent to 3 million, with the number of visitors from the Philippines having increased by a considerable 35.6 per cent.

Preliminary data also revealed that overnight-stay visitor arrivals went up slightly by 0.8 per cent to surpass 18.6 million, while same-day visitor arrivals surged by 20 per cent to exceed 20.7 million.

The average length for all visitors stood 1.2 days., with total visitor expenditure between January and September 2019 amounting to US$29.8 billion, less 2.9 per cent from the same period last year.

The average occupancy rate remained unchanged at 90 per cent with the average room rate of three to five star hotels rising 1.5 per cent to 170.1 US dollars.

The MGTo also established as its main goals for 2020, to improve smart tourism development, advance the development of Macau as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, prepare a review of the Master Plan, and diversify tourism products such as the new Macao Grand Prix Museum, set to open this year before the Summer.
