Macau: Weight of gaming industry in local economy rises in 2018

(Macau).- The weight of the tertiary sector in the local economy increased 0.9 percentage points to 95.8 per cent in 2018 from the year prior, with the gaming and junket activities now representing 50.5 per cent of that sector, a 1.5 percentage points year-on-year jump, information published by the Statistics and Census Bureau.
In total, Gross Value Added produced by the tertiary sector of Macau increased by 6.8 per cent year-on-year in real terms in 2018 to MOP418.8 billion (US$51.9 billion), with the GVA for Gaming & Junket Activities rising 10.0 per cent to MOP220.8 billion and with the contribution by Hotels & Similar Activities rising 11.4 per cent to MOP20.3 billion.
In 2018 the gaming sector generated a total of MOP302.8 billion in gross gaming revenues, a 14 per cent year-on-year jump, with local authorities having for a while expressed intentions to fight for the diversification of the local economy.
Just this week, Chief Executive-elect Ho Iat Seng again expressed that Macau’s economic structure is still reliant on the gaming sector, something he considered to not be “healthy” for the sustainable development of the city.
Meanwhile, while the weight of the hospitality sector in Macau’s economy rise slightly to a 4.6 per cent share in 2018, the share of real estate activities dropped to 9.6 per cent.
The GVA of the secondary sector declined by 12.3 per cent year-on-year in real terms to MOP18.2 billion, with the construction sector – which represented most of the total – seeing its GVA drop 14.7 per cent to MOP13.1 billion due to the successive completion of several large-scale hotels and entertainment facilities.
