Gambling Commission CEO Emphasizes Player Protection at Allwyn Conference

At the Allwyn Participant Protection Conference, Andrew Rhodes, Chief Executive of the UK Gambling Commission, delivered a keynote speech underlining the critical importance of participant protection in the evolving landscape of the National Lottery.

Rhodes praised the National Lottery as a "national institution" and stressed that protecting players must be embedded at the core of its operations—not treated as an afterthought. He noted that while the Lottery remains one of the lowest-risk gambling products, its scale and visibility demand higher standards and greater scrutiny than any other form of gambling in the UK.

During his address, Rhodes shared key data: the National Lottery raised over £1.8 billion in the last financial year, with an additional £485 million in Q1 of this year. Participation rates remain high, with 29% of surveyed adults buying a draw ticket in a recent four-week period.

Rhodes also acknowledged the successful technology upgrades led by Allwyn, the current operator, and encouraged the industry to stay ahead of risks—especially as AI, digital ID, and other technologies evolve. He urged continued investment in responsible gambling measures and highlighted the value of hearing from those with lived experience of gambling harm.

“The National Lottery is a jewel in the crown of this country,” Rhodes stated. “To preserve its reputation and value to good causes, participant protection must remain a top priority.”
