(North Dakota).- Last Wednesday, the North Dakota Senate passed a bill to eliminate the North Dakota Gaming Commission and place all authority to regulate gambling with the Attorney General’s Office.

Senate Bill 2224 received a narrow 4-3 do-pass recommendation out of committee and passed the Senate with a similarly narrow 25-21 margin.

Sen. Ryan Braunberger, D-Fargo, said during Wednesday’s floor session that he felt it was premature for the Legislature to completely eliminate the Commission.

“If we do eliminate it, the judge, jury and executioner will be the Attorney General’s Office,” Braunberger said. “There will be no balance, there will be no checks that could potentially happen.”

On the other hand, Sen. Larry Luick, R-Fairmont, said the governor was looking for ways to downsize government and the Commission was “very low-hanging fruit.”

“Testimony shared that the Commission has not even met for more than a year and do not know when they will meet again,” Luick said. “This seems to be more of a detriment than an asset of any kind ... This Commission is something that is there by name and just needs to be done away with, I believe.”

For now, it is clear that the bill still needs to pass in the House and cross the governor's desk before it becomes law.
