Online Gambling Takes the Lead in Global Market Growth

(Kiev).- The online gambling sector is booming, overtaking physical venues due to tech advancements and mobile-friendly access. Ukraine’s industry mirrors this trend, with digital betting platforms expanding rapidly.

Online Gambling Takes the Lead in Global Market Growth

Modern technology is having a profound impact on every aspect of our lives — and the global gambling industry is evolving in response. As part of the broader entertainment and leisure market, gambling is experiencing a digital shift driven by convenience, mobile accessibility, and changing consumer preferences. In 2024, online gambling is growing faster than traditional offline venues across both Europe and the global market.

The numbers speak clearly: online gambling now accounts for 39% of Europe’s total gambling market, with mobile platforms leading the charge. By 2029, mobile gambling is projected to comprise 67% of the online segment, confirming the trend toward on-the-go gaming experiences fueled by smartphone use and high-speed connectivity.

While digital gambling was already on the rise, the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the transition from land-based casinos to online platforms. With lockdowns limiting in-person gambling, millions of players migrated online — a trend that has remained strong in the years that followed. In 2024, the European gambling market generated €123.4 billion, marking a 5% increase from 2023. Forecasts for 2025 expect that figure to reach €127.7 billion, with online gambling contributing nearly €51.1 billion, or 40% of total market share.

Gen Z and Millennials Drive the Shift to Mobile Gambling

Younger demographics — particularly those aged 18 to 35 — are at the forefront of this digital migration. They value seamless, mobile-first experiences and are less likely to visit physical casinos. Their preference for digital services in general is shaping the future of gambling, pushing the industry to invest in mobile platforms, 5G connectivity, and immersive features like virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and live dealers powered by AI.

Advantages of Online Gambling Over Traditional Casinos

The success of online gambling is built on several key factors:

  • Technological Innovation: Mobile apps, 24/7 access, and real-time features improve user engagement.
  • Lower Costs and Higher Flexibility: Online platforms avoid the overhead costs of physical infrastructure, offering better bonuses and more games.
  • Regulatory Adaptability: Online operators often find it easier to comply with regulations, especially in markets with restrictions on land-based casinos, such as Sweden.
  • Shifting Consumer Habits: Digital natives prefer quick, accessible, and personalized experiences — and gambling is no exception.

With 80% of European players now gambling via smartphones, it's no surprise that online platforms are increasingly dominating the landscape.

Ukraine Aligns with European Trends in Online Gambling

Since the legalization of gambling in 2020 (Law No. 768-IX), Ukraine has been rapidly adapting to the global shift toward digital gambling. Ukrainian players are also moving to online platforms due to the same factors — accessibility, convenience, and technology integration.

If the ongoing war comes to an end, analysts expect the Ukrainian gambling market to grow at 10–15% annually, potentially outperforming the European average thanks to a relatively low starting base.

To fully capitalize on the rise of online gambling, Ukraine must prioritize:

  • Investments in digital infrastructure
  • Stronger regulatory frameworks
  • Support for mobile-first developmen

These actions can drive economic benefits while helping to manage social risks and ensuring post-war market stability.
