Treasure Box Kingdom - Meet the Sound Engineer
⏱ 2 min read
(London).- Its time to take a deep dive into the behind the scenes of the sound for the game with IGT PlayDigital sound engineer Josh Alport.
What research did you do when thinking about the sound for the game?
During the initial research into how the game should sound, I watched videos on YouTube of the original cabinet version of Treasure Box Kingdom being played by casino goers. This really helped me work out how the game sounded in a casino setting, how the players reacted to the sounds, and how this could be translated to a digital version of the game.
Talk about the process of taking a land-based game and transforming it for the digital market?
My second big task was to repurpose the original sounds from the cabinet version, to make them more suitable for various devices such as computers, phones and tablets. This included rebalancing the volume of sound effects and music, because casino-based slot games have to compete to be heard over all the background noise!
Did you encounter any challenges with the sound? If so, what were they and how did you overcome this?
One of the challenges of optimising the sound to a digital format was dealing with how much is going on in the game. There are lots of overlapping sounds such as coin symbols wooshing around and gems landing on the reels in quick succession. But in the end, I was able to create a sound which flowed very well in the digital game.
What considerations did you have to make when working on the sound of the game?
I had some careful consideration in terms of lowering the volume on some of the sounds which could potentially become fatiguing to the player, I think we hit the sweet spot of excitement and sustained playability – the perfect combination!
What is your favourite element of the sound in the game?
My favourite element of the sound in the game is how there is a strong sense of anticipation-using sound effects to pre-empt what the final reel will land on, and the incremental pitch increases of the gems landing on the reels. All of this gives the player a greater level of excitement and engagement to what the winning value will be!
