(Miami) — The NCAA has opened an investigation into 13 former basketball athletes for illegal betting on their own games, one day after suspending three players for score manipulation at Fresno State and San Jose State.
The NCAA announced it is investigating thirteen former college basketball players for their alleged involvement in illegal betting related to games in which they competed. The news comes just one day after the suspension of three athletes for manipulating game results for financial gain.
In an official statement, the NCAA explained that the violations under investigation include the sharing of information with third parties , as well as the refusal of some involved to cooperate with the process. While the names of the players under investigation were not revealed, the organization clarified that none remain enrolled at the universities involved, including Eastern Michigan, Temple, Arizona State, New Orleans, North Carolina A&T, and Mississippi Valley .
The evidence collected includes text messages, social media direct messages, and other evidence obtained after detecting unusual betting activity during the regular season. The NCAA reminded that student-athletes and staff are prohibited from participating in sports betting at any level , and those who violate this rule lose their eligibility to compete.
NCAA President Charlie Baker warned that the rise of sports betting creates more opportunities for conduct that compromises the integrity of sports . He also urged regulators and sportsbooks to strengthen preventive measures.
The investigation follows the announcement of sanctions imposed on Fresno State and San Jose State players Mykell Robinson, Steven Vasquez, and Jalen Weaver , who were expelled for manipulating scores and betting on their own performance.
