Macau government to revise its 2025 GGR

(Macau).- The decision by the Macau government to revise its 2025 gross gaming revenue (GGR) target downwards came as no surprise, pointed out CreditSights analysts in a recent note.

Macau government to revise its 2025 GGR

A new official forecast out earlier this week trimmed the figure to MOP228 billion (US$28.22 billion) from MOP240 billion – given that the year-to-date trends had fallen short of initial projections.

The monthly GGR has been running short of the initial target of MOP20 billion. For the first five months of the year, the monthly average stood at roughly MOP19.5 billion.

This is not a complete surprise given the softer-than-required monthly GGR prints since the start of the year; we view the new target as more conservative and in-line with the sector’s performance YTD,” wrote analysts Nicholas Chen and David Bussey.

The new target suggests a year-on-year increase of 0.5 per cent from last year’s.

The analysts noted that the month of April saw a substantial boost in visitation numbers, which helped offset the lower spending numbers of casino goers.

Visitor arrivals for April were up by 13 per cent from the previous year, mitigating the 11 percent year-over-year decline in GGR per visitor, the analysts said.

Macau’s GGR for the month of May has exceeded market expectations, growing by around 5 per cent from a year earlier – due to a strong visitation from the Labour Day Golden Week Holiday between 1 and 5 May.

During that span, there was a boost of 41 per cent.

The GGR for May reached around 82 per cent of pre-pandemic levels – by far the highest level since the post-Covid opening.
