(Las Vegas).- The NFL is attempting to take the sin out of “Sin City” ahead of this year’s Super Bowl in Las Vegas.
In a September email correspondence, the league gave a short list of rules for players attending or participating in Super Bowl LVIII.
“While in Las Vegas, players participating in the Super Bowl are prohibited from engaging in any form of gambling, including casino games and betting on any sport,” the September memo reads.
Players participating in the big game won’t be allowed to play blackjack, but that rule won’t apply to other players attending the game as a spectator.
Those players are still allowed to gamble while in Vegas, but they will need to tread lightly when it relates to sports betting.
The correspondence continues that non-participating players can bet on sports (not the NFL), but are not allowed to enter a sportsbook until after the Super Bowl is completed.
There is an exemption that states players are only allowed to walk through a sportsbook if it is the only way to get where to their destination.
For instance, players staying at the Las Vegas hotel Red Rock may want to go to Gridiron Grill. That player would need to walk through the sportsbook to get to their desired destination.
There could be some obvious gray area lingering around here, though.
Players, especially those participating in the game, will be tempted to talk betting given the Super Bowl is the pinnacle gambling day of the year and the game is located in Las Vegas.
The NFL has been heavily involved in gambling as 2018 legalization changed the way the league views betting on sports. Caesars, DraftKings, and FanDuel are heavily involved in advertising for the league.
