In July, U.S. commercial gaming revenue grew 3.1 percent compared to the same month in 2023, the industry’s 41st consecutive month of annual growth. According to data from state regulators compiled by the American Gaming Association (AGA), industry win from traditional casino games, sports betting and iGaming reached $5.71 billion, setting a new monthly high for July.
Through the first seven months of 2024, commercial gaming revenue has surpassed last year’s record-setting pace by 7.2 percent, totaling $41.23 billion.
Nationwide, the legal casino gaming, sports betting and iGaming verticals generated $1.24 billion in state gaming tax revenue in July and have paid nearly $8.93billion in gaming taxes alone over the first seven months of year.

Of the 33 commercial gaming jurisdictions that were operational a year ago and had published complete July data, 23 reported an increase in combined revenue from traditional casino games, sports betting and iGaming.
Sports betting revenue data was not yet available for Arizona and Oregon at the time of writing.

Land-based gaming, including combined revenue from casino slots, table games and retail sports betting declined by 4.8 percent year-over-year to $4.22 billion in July, which featured a less favorable calendar due to one less weekend day compared to July 2023.
At the same time, online gaming continued its robust growth, with combined revenue from online sports betting and iGaming jumping 35.4 percent year-over-year to $1.48 billion. In July, online gaming accounted for 25.9 percent of total commercial gaming revenue compared to 19.7 percent in July 2023.

Traditional casino slot machines and table games continue to comprise the bulk of revenue for the U.S. commercial gaming industry, despite slowing year-to-date growth. In July, these segments collectively generated $4.2 billion in total revenue, a 4.7 percent contraction over last July. Slot machines generated $3.1 billion, down 1.4 percent, while table game revenue fell by 15.3 percent to $827.4 million.
National table game revenue in July was heavily impacted by a significant contraction in Nevada which saw a steep decline in Las Vegas Strip baccarat hold compared to the previous year. At the state level, Will Rodgers Downs in Oklahoma remained closed throughout July due to storm damage, heavily impacting performance in the Sooner State. Excluding Nevada, nationwide table game revenue declined by 5.8 percent.
These individual slot and table game figures exclude data from Louisiana and Michigan due to different state reporting methods, but their combined totals are included in the nationwide traditional gaming total.
Traditional gaming revenue sluggishness was widespread, with just six out of the 27 states offering traditional casino slot machines and/or table games reporting gains compared to July 2023.
Through the end of July, year-to-date revenue from casino slot machines and table games totaled $29.01 billion, 0.1 percent ahead of the same period in 2023. This slight national increase is largely driven by new casino openings in Illinois, Nebraska and Virginia.

In July, land-based and online sportsbooks generated a combined $834.4 million in commercial revenue across 32 jurisdictions, excluding Arizona and Oregon, which had not reported their data at the time of publication. This represents a 34.4 percent increase from July 2023, when commercial sports betting was active in 30 jurisdictions.
Since last July, four new states have launched commercial sports betting: Kentucky, Maine, North Carolina and Vermont. Excluding the impact of new sports betting markets, organic sports betting revenue grew by 32.3 percent compared to July 2023.
Year-to-date, commercial sports betting revenue reached $7.56 billion through July, exceeding the same period in the previous year by 30.3 percent.

The iGaming sector continued its strong growth in July as revenue expanded 32.5 percent year-over-year to $669.8 million across seven active states.
State-level revenue increased year-over-year in all six states where iGaming was active in July 2023. Notably, Delaware iGaming revenue increased nearly 340 percent in July as a result of a shift in the state’s iGaming partner.
Year-to-date through July, iGaming revenue reached $4.64 billion, a 26.6 percent increase compared to the same month last year.
