Sports Betting Revenue Records Set In Massachusetts in September

September set multiple MA sports betting revenue records, as operators and regulators saw handle and tax collections reach new monthly highs.

Operators kept more than 11% of handle for $75.4 million in revenue. The September tax payment topped $14.6 million, besting the market’s previous high of $14.2 million from January this year. The state has collected $187.9 million in sports betting taxes since the market opened in January 2023.

Popular MA sports betting apps

Boston-based bookmaker DraftKings led the online MA sports betting market in September handle and revenue. The hometown app accepted $355.2 million in bets and kept nearly 11.2% for $38.8 million in revenue.

FanDuel won $22.1 million behind a market-leading 12.3% September hold. Bettors staked $182.4 million with FanDuel online during the month.

BetMGM also kept more than 12% from players in September, winning $5.5 million from $45.6 million in bets.

Fanatics posts highest volume month

Fanatics set a new high-water mark for monthly volume since debuting in the MA sports betting market.

Bettors staked $37.9 million through the app in September. It was the first time since its Bay State launch in May 2023 that Fanatics handled more than $26 million in a single month.

Fanatics cleared $1.9 million in revenue behind a 5% monthly hold.

Massachusetts sports betting growth

Record handle in September helped across-the-board growth for the Massachusetts sports betting market.

Total volume was up nearly 31% over the $519.8 million bet in September 2023. Operator revenue was up almost 48% with winnings at $75.4 million in September this year compared to $51 million during the same month last year.

The $14.6 million September tax payment was nearly $5 million more than the $9.9 million collected in September 2023.
