Sports Betting Revenues Are Soaring: But Why Does Washington D.C. Appear To Be an Exception?

(United States).- Judging by millions in ad spend, no one can deny the global upswing in sports betting. One would be led to assume that things rather much look the same across all the states in the US, but as it turns out, there is one exception to the rule: Washington D.C.

Sports Betting Revenues Are Soaring: But Why Does Washington D.C. Appear To Be an Exception?

But why is this the case?

Although online sportsbooks in the US are recording great financial results, the sports betting landscape in Washington D.C. appears to be lagging behind in terms of revenue generated. Some theories ascribe this to the initial launch-related hurdles of Gambet D.C., the state’s first sports betting app. The platform only brought secured $5.5m in funding. In comparison, William Hill, one of its competitors, amassed roughly $14m.

The fact that the sports events following its release were limited does not help either. Unfortunately, the ongoing situation has forced live events to be either canceled outright or postponed indefinitely. Since the fans are unable to attend sports events, this has a negative effect on the betting volume, thus ultimately leaving a mark on the overall revenue generated.

Recently, Kathy Patterson, an auditor based in Washington D.C., has published a report that outlines the tax revenue collected from sports betting and compares it to the projected outcome. Originally, the D.C. Lottery expected the sports betting tax revenue for the period between May 2020 and March 2021 to be somewhere in the ballpark of $6.2m, but in reality, the numbers were closer to $1.8m. That amounts to a discrepancy of almost $4m!

Despite all of these issues, Washington D.C. is home to more than a couple of sports teams that know how to hold their own in the heat of the competition. The Washington Football Team is the first one that comes to mind. Although they suffered a defeat against Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the support of the local fans will carry them as we progress through the year. And let’s not forget the other contenders such as Washington Capitals and the Washington Wizards!

As you can see, out of all the possible explanations and theories, the local sports teams are unlikely to be a major contributing factor (or perhaps even a factor at all). There is, however, one other thing that deserves a mention. As highlighted by Patterson, about 17% of users placing their bets through the Gambet D.C. app end up on the winning side, in contrast to 5.4% that seems to be the industry standard observed at other sportsbooks. Upon the first glance, this may appear beneficial, but do bear in mind that the government coffers end up suffering as a result.

In conclusion, there is no single reason that explains why sports betting revenues in Washington D.C. are lagging behind the other states. Much of its current situation is a co-product of various different factors that are at play simultaneously.

The good news is, once society returns to normal, the local sports betting industry is expected to pick up the pace, right along with what the global trends are showing us. And when that happens, we will all be cheering for our favorite teams with bags of popcorn at our fingertips and our sports betting apps of choice, all fired up and ready to rumble!
