Georgia House Rejects Sports Betting Bill Ahead of Key Legislative Deadline

(Georgia).- Placing a wager on a favorite sports team in the U.S. state of Georgia will remain illegal for the foreseeable future after lawmakers rejected a proposal to legalize sports betting.

Georgia House Rejects Sports Betting Bill Ahead of Key Legislative Deadline

A bill that sought to authorize the practice failed to pass in the Georgia House of Representatives on Friday, falling short of the required support before a critical legislative deadline. The measure needed 120 votes to advance but received only 63 in favor, while 98 lawmakers voted against it.

Sports betting has long been a recurring topic of debate at the state Capitol and does not divide lawmakers strictly along party lines. Some conservative legislators support legalization, arguing that it could generate economic benefits for the state. Others oppose the idea on moral or religious grounds. Meanwhile, members from both major parties have raised concerns that online gambling platforms may exploit addiction, while proponents argue that regulating an activity already occurring informally would provide oversight and resources to help individuals struggling with gambling problems.

The proposal, known as House Resolution 450, aimed to allocate proceeds from legalized sports wagering to a dedicated fund supporting pre-kindergarten programs and other educational initiatives. A portion of the revenue would also have been earmarked for programs focused on preventing and treating gambling addiction.

During the debate, Democratic Representative Al Williams of Midway said he supports expanding gaming in Georgia but urged fellow Democrats to oppose the resolution. He argued that members of his party were not given sufficient input regarding how the potential revenue would be distributed.

Republican Representative Alan Powell of Hartwell, who generally supports gambling expansion, also encouraged colleagues to vote against the bill. Powell contended that the measure did not go far enough and suggested the state would benefit more from destination resort casinos capable of attracting out-of-state visitors. According to him, sports betting alone would generate relatively limited revenue for Georgia.

Democratic Representative Long Tran of Dunwoody framed the debate as an issue connected to national security. He argued that unregulated gambling platforms—often operated outside the United States—could expose users, including young people, to data risks and gambling addiction, emphasizing that legalization and regulation would provide stronger oversight.

The discussion grew more personal when Republican Representative Kasey Carpenter of Dalton spoke about his own struggles with gambling addiction. Carpenter said that regulated sports betting could help reduce harmful practices associated with illegal bookmakers, where debts can escalate quickly due to credit-based betting.

The vote took place on “Crossover Day,” the final deadline for legislation to pass from one chamber to the other in order to maintain a viable path toward becoming law. The current legislative session in Georgia is scheduled to conclude on April 2.
