(Gibraltar).- According to CDC Gaming, the government is drafting new gambling laws in reaction to the UK’s proposed tax hikes on online betting, warning that the measures will directly impact operators based in the territory.

Gibraltar fast‑tracks gaming law to buffer operators against UK tax jump

The issue was raised in Parliament by Nigel Feetham KC MP, Gibraltar’s Minister of Trade and Industry, who delivered an initial assessment of how the UK’s Budget 2026 will affect local operators. Feetham said the territory must focus on practical measures that can help licensed businesses manage higher operating costs once the new rules come into force.

He underlined the scale of the increase in Remote Gaming Duty, which will rise from 21% to 40% on 1 April 2026, while General Betting Duty will go from 15% to 25% in April 2027. “This is an issue of vital importance to Gibraltar and one that may directly and indirectly affect our public revenues,” Feetham said.

As covered by Tribuna.com, he told the House that the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer’s decision could directly and indirectly affect Gibraltar’s public revenues. Over recent months, Gibraltar officials have lobbied extensively in the UK to highlight the local consequences of the proposed measures.

Currently, the online gambling sector accounts for roughly 30% of Gibraltar’s GDP, employs more than 3,400 people, and generates about one-third of public tax receipts through corporate income tax, personal income tax, social insurance, and local gambling duties.
