Maine Targets Unlicensed Sweepstakes Gambling with New Crackdown Proposal

(Maine).- The State moves to ban sweepstakes platforms using dual-currency systems, aligning with a national push to regulate unlicensed online gambling.

Maine Targets Unlicensed Sweepstakes Gambling with New Crackdown Proposal

Maine has become the latest state to focus on unregulated gambling through sweepstakes platforms. The Maine Department of Public Safety has proposed new legislation to crack down on operators offering dual-currency wagering, where players buy virtual tokens redeemable for real cash prizes.

Key points of the proposal

Fines up to $100,000 for operators violating the law.

A full ban on sweepstakes platforms not licensed by the state.

Restricting legal gambling operations to federally recognized tribes.

The bill targets companies like Rebet, Novig, and ProphetX, which have been active in Maine despite lacking state licenses. Regulators warn players that disputes with these platforms are not protected by the state.

Milton Champion, director of the Maine Gambling Control Unit, previously urged residents: “Patrons who choose to engage with these unlicensed platforms do so at their own risk.”

The proposal now moves to the Legislature’s gambling committee, where co-chair Laura Supica emphasized the need for thoughtful regulation as online gaming expands.

Maine’s move mirrors actions in New York, where Governor Kathy Hochul may soon sign a sweeping ban on online sweepstakes casinos. If enacted, New York would join California, New Jersey, Nevada, Connecticut, and Montana in prohibiting these unlicensed platforms.
