(Colorado). -The Colorado Lottery is reminding adults and parents to not give children or teenagers lottery tickets as presents this holiday season.
While lottery tickets make great last-minute and easy presents or stocking stuffers, 11 News spoke with the Colorado Lottery, who is raising awareness about the risks of buying lottery tickets for children.
“The message is pretty straight forward. We believe lottery tickets make great gifts, but only for adults. Hopefully it’s more preventative actually then trying to be a solution because I think what we’re seeing is obviously a great increase in the amount of gambling that’s available in Colorado. It’s been increasing every year and the visibility of it has been increasing every year,” said Director of the Colorado Lottery Tom Seaver.
The Colorado Lottery says research shows that the earlier a person’s participation or even exposure to gambling is in childhood, the more likely they are to develop a gambling problem later in life. According to the Problem Gambling Coalition of Colorado, between 60-80% of high school students report having gambled for money during the past year.
“It’s like any other behavior. Young people emulate what they see from the adults, and they want to do what the adults do. Scratching off scratch tickets is fun, picking numbers is fun... Inherently there’s nothing wrong, but it’s just the idea that it gets them into the mindset that this is a normal thing and they should be very cautions about exposing their children to gambling,” said Seaver.
During November and December and through the holidays, the Lottery will raise awareness about the risks of youth gambling by encouraging age-appropriate play through public service announcements, social media, in-store signage, and retailer communications.
